The Samsung Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) is a smartphone running the Android operating system that was announced by Samsung on 13 February 2011 at the Mobile World Congress. It is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S, with a different appearance and significantly improved hardware.[3] The phone is also the predecessor of the Samsung Galaxy S III.[4] The Galaxy S II was one of the slimmest smartphones of the time, mostly 8.49 mm thick, except for two small bulges which take the maximum thickness of the phone to 9.91 mm.[5] The Galaxy S II has a 1.2 GHz dual-core "Exynossystem on a chip (SoC) processor,[6] 1 GB of RAM, a 10.8 cm (4.3 in) WVGA Super AMOLED Plus screen display and an 8-megapixel camera with flash and 1080p full high definition video recording. It is one of the first devices to offer a Mobile High-definition Link (MHL),[7] which allows up to 1080p uncompressed video output to an MHL enabled TV or to an MHL to HDMI adapter, while charging the device at the same time. USB On-The-Go(USB OTG) is supported.[8][9]
The user-replaceable battery on the Galaxy S II gives up to ten hours of heavy usage, or two days of lighter usage.[10] According to Samsung, the Galaxy S II is capable of providing nine hours of talk time on 3G and 18.3 hours on 2G.[10][11]The Galaxy S II was given worldwide release dates starting from May 2011, by more than 140 vendors in some 120 countries.[12]
On 9 May 2011, Samsung announced that they had received pre-orders for 3 million Galaxy S II units globally.[13]
In some time after the device's release, Samsung also released a Nvidia Tegra 2 powered Samsung Galaxy R (or 'Galaxy Z' in Sweden) variant version. The release of the Galaxy R 'GT-I9103' corroborated with early pre-release reports of an Nvidia powered Galaxy S II smartphone.[14][15] Eldar Murtazin, of Mobile-Review.com, hinted that Samsung might have faced delays in meeting worldwide shipment of both its Exynos chip and Super AMOLED Plus screens. He noted that nobody expected the "huge success" and "sky high" demand for the previous Samsung Galaxy S.[16]
Different regions around the world have received this device to market beginning from the earliest of April 2011.The Galaxy S II has a 1.2 GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor that uses Samsung's own 'Exynos 4210' System on a chip(SoC) that was previously code-named "Orion".
The Exynos branded SoC was the source of much speculation concerning another branded successor to the previous "Hummingbird" single-core SoC of the Samsung Galaxy S. The Exynos 4210 uses ARM's Mali-400 MP GPU.[26][27] This graphics GPU, supplied by ARM, is a move away from the PowerVR GPU of the Samsung Galaxy S.[28]
The Exynos 4210 supports ARM's SIMD engine (also known as Media Processing Engine, or 'NEON' instructions), and may give a significant performance advantage in critical performance situations such as accelerated decoding for many multimedia codecs and formats (e.g., On2's VP6/7/8 or Real formats).[29][30][31]
At the 2011 Game Developers Conference ARM's representatives demonstrated 60 Hz framerate playback in stereoscopic 3D running on the same Mali-400 MP and Exynos SoC. They said that an increased framerate of 70 Hz would be possible through the use of an HDMI 1.4 port.[27]
The Motorola Atrix advertised in June 2011 that it was "the world's most powerful smartphone"; in August 2011 the UK Advertising Standards Authority ruled that the Atrix was not as powerful as Galaxy SII due to its faster processor.[32]
A newer Samsung Galaxy S II (i9100G) uses a 1.2 GHz dual core TI OMAP 4430 processor with PowerVR SGX540 graphics.[3

The Samsung Galaxy S is an Android smartphone that was announced by Samsung in March 2010. It features a 1 GHz ARM"Hummingbird" processor, 8–16 GB internal flash memory, a 4 inches (10 centimetres) 480×800 pixel Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5-megapixel camera with a maximum resolution of 2560x1920 and, on select models, a front-facing 0.3 MP VGA camera (640x480).[2][3] The base version of the phone, the GT-I9000, was quickly followed by variant models for the US carriers such as the Epic 4G, Vibrant, Captivate, Fascinate, and Mesmerize.
The Samsung Galaxy S features a PowerVR graphics processor, yielding 20 million triangles per second,[4] making it the fastest graphics processing unit in any smartphone at the time of release.[5] Also, upon release, the Galaxy S was both the first Android phone to be certified for DivX HD,[6] and at 9.9 mm was the thinnest smartphone available.[7]
As of January 2011, Samsung had sold 10 million Galaxy S phones globally.[8] The Galaxy S was named the European Smartphone of the Year at the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) Awards 2010–2011.[9] Samsung Galaxy S was succeeded bySamsung Galaxy S II. In October 2011, Samsung announced that it had sold 30 million Galaxy S and Galaxy S II phones globally.The phone was initially launched in Singapore on June 4, 2010.[11] Before the end of its first weekend on sale in Singapore, Samsungtweeted that Singtel, the exclusive carrier to sell the device in Singapore, were sold out of devices.[12] On Friday June 25, 2010, the phone was launched in Malaysia and South Korea.[13][14] Overall the launch schedule comprised launches on 110 carriers in 100 countries at the same time.[15] U.S. Variants named as Epic, Vibrant, Fascinate, Captivate, and Mesmerize were released from June through September 2010.CNET Asia gave the Galaxy S a favorable review with a score of 8.4/10. The Galaxy S was compared to current high-end Android-based phones such as the HTC Desire, Xperia X10, Nexus One, and smartphones using different operating systems like the iPhone 4, which runs iOS, and HTC HD2, which runs Windows Mobile in CNET Asia.[16]
GSMArena.com described the Galaxy S as having "perfect audio quality," claiming the phone's superior all-round performance made it a "new leader of the Android pack."[17]
TIME listed the Galaxy S as #2 device in "Top 10 Gadgets" of 2010, praising its Super AMOLED display.[18]
The phone was criticized by some reviewers for sub-par GPS performance. Anandtech, reviewing the Epic 4G variant, said "the phone will take an inordinate amount of time to determine your actual location, and/or it won’t pinpoint your location very accurately."[19]Engadget described the GPS in the Vibrant and Captivate variants as "utterly broken and non-functional... this is a problem for which there's no reasonable explanation why it made it all the way to retail devices."[20] Samsung released an application for the Captivate and Vibrant variants only that resets the phone's GPS settings to factory defaults.[21] TechRadar acknowledged GPS faults in the Galaxy S, and stated that these have been fixed in the Google Nexus S

The iPhone 4S is a touchscreen-based, slate-sized smartphone developed by Apple Inc. It is the fifth generation of the iPhone[5]and retains the exterior design of its predecessor, the iPhone 4, but is host to a range of improved hardware specifications andsoftware updates.[6] The phone added a voice recognition system known as Siri, for which the S in the products name stands,[7]and a cloud storage service named iCloud. Some of the device's functions may be voice-controlled through Siri.
On October 4, 2011, in Cupertino, California, Apple announced the iPhone 4S. On October 7, 2011, it became available for preorder in seven initial countries (United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan) with the first delivery date set for October 14, 2011 and available on that same day for direct in-store sales in those countries. It was released in 22 more countries, including Ireland, Mexico, and Singapore on October 28.[8]
It is available for 100 cell service carriers in 70 countries, including eight carriers in the United States.[9][10] For US customers, unlocked (contract-free) sales started on November 11, 2011.[11][12] The Associated Press said that AT&T described early iPhone 4S demand as "extraordinary".[13] Reception to the iPhone 4S was generally favorable. Reviewers noted Siri, the new camera, and processing speeds as significant advantages over the prior model.[14][15][16] Four million units of the iPhone 4S were sold in the first three days of release.Speculation about Apple's next generation phone, including various specifications and a predicted name ("iPhone 5"), were widespread in the time preceding its debut.[17] After the iPhone 4S was announced, there was some disappointment about the new phone's name.[17] As early as May 2011, some leaks had a fairly accurate description of the product including the name "iPhone 4S", the A5 chip, HSDPA+,[18] new camera, and Sprint carrying.[19]
There were no external differences between the iPhone 4 CDMA model and the iPhone 4S;[17] all changes were internal (slight external differences between the iPhone 4 GSM model and the iPhone 4S exist, as said differences existed between the CDMA and GSM models of the iPhone 4).[20][21]
The iPhone 4S was unveiled at Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" event on October 4, 2011, on the Apple Campus in Cupertino, California.[22] The keynote was the first in which Tim Cook led since the Verizon keynote earlier in the year. It was also Cook's first product launch without Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs, whose health was deteriorating and died the day after the announcement of iPhone 4S. Tim Carmody of Wired praised Cook for focusing on company achievements, calling him a "global business thinker" and a "taskmaster".[23]
At the "Let's Talk iPhone" event held by Apple on October 4, 2011, Mike Capps demonstrated Epic Games' Infinity Blade II, the sequel to Infinity Blade, on an iPhone 4S. Capps boasted that the game uses Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 and features the same graphic techniques used in the Xbox 360 game Gears of War 3.[24]

The iPhone is a line of smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The first iPhone was unveiled by Steve Jobs, then CEO of Apple, on January 9, 2007, and released on June 29, 2007. The 5th generation iPhone, the iPhone 4S, was announced on October 4, 2011, and released 10 days later.
An iPhone can function as a video camera (video recording was not a standard feature until the iPhone 3GS was released), a camera phone, a portable media player, and an Internet client with email and web browsing capabilities, can send texts and receive visual voicemail, and has both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. The user interface is built around the device's multi-touch screen, including a virtual keyboard rather than a physical one.
Third-party as well as Apple application software is available from the App Store, which launched in mid-2008 and now has over 500,000 "apps" approved by Apple. These apps have diverse functions, including gamesreferenceGPS navigationsocial networking, security, and advertising for television shows, films, and celebrities.
There are five generations of iPhone models, each accompanied by one of the five major releases of iOS (formerly iPhone OS). Theoriginal iPhone was a GSM phone, and established design precedents, such as screen size and button placement, that have persisted through all models. The iPhone 3G added 3G cellular network capabilities and A-GPS location. The iPhone 3GS added a compass, fasterprocessor, and higher resolution camera, including video recording at 480p.
The iPhone 4 has a rear-facing camera (720p video) and a front facing camera (at a lower resolution) for FaceTime video calling and for use in other apps like Skype. The iPhone 4 featured a higher-resolution 960 × 640 display; it was released on June 24, 2010. In the U.S.,AT&T was the only authorized carrier until February 10, 2011, when a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 launched for Verizon. On October 4, 2011, Apple announced the iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 4S added a higher resolution camera (8 megapixel) with 1080p video recording, face detection, and video stabilization, a faster, dual core processor, support for both GSM/UMTS and CDMA on one chip, GLONASS support and a natural language voice control system called Siri. It is available in 16 GB and 32 GB, as well as a new 64 GB capacity. In the United States, it was announced that two new carriers, Sprint and C Spire, would begin carrying the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S in October and November 2011, respectively. On April 20, 2012, six more regional US carriers (Cellcom, Appalachian Wireless, Alaska Communications, GCI, MTA Solutions, and nTelos) were added in to the list of iPhone service providers.
